Welcome to the July Issue of MTC Focus —

The transition continues as we have posted our flags and various TKD displays in the former Tumble Tots room, now the TKD room. We expect to install the stereo system from the old school for use during those “between-times” workouts, and possibly a special TK-Aerobics class. The lobby conversion is moving ahead, as one of the restrooms is being converted into a coffee/concession stand.

The gym area will be warmer in the summer, so be sure to keep a water bottle handy. There is an ice machine in the little closet room just off the weight room. Cold bottled water is available for 50 cents in the cooler in the weight room.

There will be a student/parent/instructor meeting Wednesday, July 21 at 6 p.m. at the Midwest Gymnastics Center to discuss concerns, ideas, and the current status of MTC. This should last no more than 30 minutes.

Midwest Gymnastics Center has purchased booth space for the Slice of Shoreview event on July 23-25, and they have offered to share the space with us. It would be helpful if we can have some people representing MTC there, even if it’s only for an hour or so. This will be a great opportunity to generate interest in our school, right in the neighborhood. If interested, please contact Mr. Al Fix. Mr. Fix will be there as much as possible during that weekend.

Corporal (and 2nd Dan Black Belt) Steve Kalina's Marine Corps unit will be holding a fundraiser car wash on Saturday, July 31 at the Sinclair station at 694 and Lexington from 9a.m. to 3p.m. The proceeds will go to support the deployed Marines and their families.

A tubing and camping trip down the Apple river is planned for Saturday July 31. Meet at Mr. Koy's house at 11:00 a.m. and depart shortly after that. See Mr. Koy for more details.

The Lee Tournament of Champions is scheduled for August 7 at Concordia College. Flyers are available on the desk. This is a well-attended tournament, and kicks off the fall tournament season.

The United States Taekwondo Union (USTU) announced that the 2004 Nationals will be held in Colorado Springs, CO, November 3-7, 2004.

If you have an email address, please provide it to us by leaving a legible note in Mr. Fix’s mailbox in the office. This will be used to send out updated information as necessary regarding class times, test dates, etc., and to send an electronic version of the newsletter if you wish to get it that way. These will be sent out as a “bcc:” list in order to keep your emails private.

Student News and Accomplishments —

CONGRATULATIONS! to Master Punnarin Koy and Charee Denker, who were joined in matrimony July 9 in a colorful, elaborate ceremony.

Thor Bloom did 42 push-ups in his gym class. The next week, he did 46 push-ups when warming up for TKD class. Great job Thor!

Cousins Nicolette Musachio and Cristian Perez must have had an intense session, because they each did 500 situps in a self-motivated workout!

If you watch "Dateline NBC" you might catch a glimpse of Mr. Al Fix. They are doing a segment on the Edison Class of 1979, a weight-loss program where five graduates are trying different diet regimens. The segment will run either Thursday, July 22 or Sunday, July 25. Mr. Fix is a part of the Edison Alumni Band, which was asked to perform the Dateline NBC theme, and several minutes of video footage were shot by the NBC crew. As the focus of the segment will be on the dieters, only a quick cut of the band may be shown, but look for the only guy with the tenor saxophone.

How to Study Your Forms All Day —

Having trouble remembering parts of your form? Try this! Put your form as a background movie on your computer!

Most computers can show a picture format called GIF. These can also be animated GIFs that create motion by stringing several pictures together, with a delay, much like a movie in a projector shows one frame at a time. These GIFs can be used as a background, or wallpaper, on Windows PC's.

First, find a GIF that you like. The TKD Tae Geuk and Pal Gwe form GIFs can be found at the Poomse link at:

http://www.fisks.com/tkd

Right click on the moving picture, and save to your hard drive. It should be in GIF format.

Now, right click on any blank space on your Windows Desktop. Select "Properties" and the "Background" tab. If the GIF name you saved is not on the list, click "Browse" and locate it in your computer. (Remember where you saved it? If not, use "Find" or "Search" from the My Computer icon, or simply save it again and note the folder). You may have to select from the drop-down list “Files of Type”, choose "All Files", or any selection that lists GIF, in order for it to show up in the list of files. Click "Save" (or "Open"). Back at the Display Properties box, determine how you want the display to look (Center, Tile, or Stretch). Note that Tile or Stretch can be a bit overwhelming to look at all day, so Center is recommended. Click OK, and you should now be able to see the GIF in action on your desktop.

If there are any problems, feel free ask Mr. Fix.

HealthKick: Are Your Supplements Helping or Harming You? —

by Jennifer G. Galea, MS, RD

As martial artists, we are often tempted to try herbal and/or “all natural” supplements to increase our athletic performance. Like many people, we might also try these types of supplements to cure or improve a variety of ailments as well. But because these supplements are not considered to be drugs by the government’s regulatory agencies, the ingredients aren’t well controlled. This means that potentially and even proven harmful ingredients can be included in the supplements.

Products containing these ingredients can be readily found in stores and online, most without any hint on the label or packaging that they contain a potentially harmful substance. Consuming many of these can lead to major organ damage (kidney, heart, or liver) and some are potentially carcinogenic.

As with any substance that you put into your body, the most important aspect is to know what you are taking and what its effects are. Read labels carefully. Research any ingredients on which you do not have full information to make your decision.

The May 2004 issue of Consumer Reports has a full listing of the varied names under which each of the following substances may be listed.

DO NOT use any supplements that contain any of the following ingredients:

Aristolochic acid Bitter orange
Comfrey Organ/gladular extracts
Androstenedione Lobelia
Chaparral Pennyroyal oil
Germander Scullcap
Kava Yohimbe
